Halifax and its sister brand Bank of Scotland have been owned by the Lloyds Banking Group since 2009, when the group acquired HBOS. Other brands in the group include Bank of Scotland, Lloyds Bank and Birmingham Midshires.
As part of one of the largest banking groups in the UK, it is able to offer comprehensive banking services, from current accounts to mortgages, credit cards to personal loans.
Although Halifax has a patchy record in our happiness and trust ratings, it does tend to be above average in terms of its complaints handling record and transparency for its banking products.
In our most recent ratings, Halifax qualified for a Gold Fairer Finance Ribbon for its personal loans and savings, and has also retained its Gold Ribbon from last time around for its credit cards.
Halifax narrowly missed out on a Bronze Ribbon for current accounts, after losing a fair few marks in our transparency analysis.
And its mortgages fared less well - a low trust rating holds it back in mid-table.
