Newcastle Building Society's roots date back to the mid-19th century when the Grainger and the Newcastle Permanent Building Societies were formed.
These merged in 1980 under the new name, but it remains a fairly small organisation. It only has around 30 branches in the UK and these are clustered in the North of the country.
Alongside mortgages and savings accounts, it also offers home insurance.
Its home insurance is underwritten by Legal & General.
