Royal London is the UK's largest mutual life and pensions company – meaning it is owned by its customers and not by private shareholders.
Royal London was established in 1861, making it also one of the UK’s oldest mutual insurance societies.
As well as the Royal London brand, it also owns the Scottish Provident and Scottish Life brands, which merged under the parent brand in 2015. It has only recently launched products which are available for customers to buy directly - and its life insurance product is one of the first.
While it scores well on transparency, Royal London's claims rates and complaints record are not as good as others in the sector.
